An Effective Approach to Weight Loss Using Ayurveda

Ayurveda, literally meaning life knowledge, can safely be considered a sister branch of Yoga. With the latter science being relatively popular than Ayurveda, it is unlikely that many people know the real meaning, value and infinite benefits of this aspect of science. A few commonly associated benefits of Ayurveda include prevention and treatment of diseases, improved personal and psychological health, as well as overall benefits for your body. You might have come across people who will vow that Ayurvedic treatment for weight loss is not only amongst the best, but the advantages of the diet also include better immunity and digestion, combined with significantly better and healthier skin.

Here, let’s look at some Ayurvedic herbs effective in weight loss.

  • Gymnema – Commonly known to work against sugar, this herb has been in use for thousands of years. Ayurvedic practitioners believe that consumption of this herb helps suppress the level of blood sugar in the body. The herb is now made use of in a number of Ayurvedic medications.
  • Guggul – This is essentially resin extract, and is collected from the Indian bdellium-tree (scientifically known as Commiphora wightii). The herb acts as a fat killer, working to remove the accumulated body fat, boosting cellular flame, while also enhancing the overall functioning of the liver. Guggul also helps in controlling cholesterol level in the body. And while we’re discussing the benefits of this very effective but not-so-popular herb, let us also mention that it plays an important role in actuating tissue regrowth, in addition to boosting growth of white blood cells. Considered an excellent Ayurvedic treatment for weight loss, Guggul is also helpful in situations where people are suffering from arthritis, gout, nervous disorders, skin and diabetes.
  • Ginger – Ginger is helpful in more ways than one, and weight loss is just another aspect. The herb contains photochemical, and this is what helps in facilitating cholesterol metabolism as well as disintegration of fatty acids.

No advice is helpful unless implemented. To make sure you have a proper idea of your diet when you undertake weight loss through Ayurveda, we list below some food items for your diet chart.

  • If you prefer waking up early in the morning, you might want to have something before breakfast. An Ayurvedic weight loss diet would recommend chopping a lemon in half, adding a tablespoon of honey to it, and mixing it in a glass of warm water.
  • Breakfast might include sprouted beans or wheat, best combined with a skimmed milk.
  • For those of us in the habit of having a midmorning meal, consider having an orange, carrot or pineapple juice.
  • Ayurveda gives significant importance to lunch, and is considered the main meal of the day. It should comprise of a raw fruit salad, steaming boiled raw veggies that can be consumed with whole grain bread.
  • Mid-afternoon meal should typically consist of some dry fruits, ginger/lemon tea, organic vegetable soup or coconut water.
  • Dinner should be light, and ideally consists of wholegrain bread and steamed veggies.

When following Ayurvedic treatment for weight loss, you must remember that this is not an elimination diet, and no food groups are prohibited. In fact, the treatment works best when you incorporate all six main tastes (namely sweet, sour, salty, pungent, astringent and bitter) into one.
