Creating the Perfect Table for Christmas Dinner

Christmas is all about enjoying the company of family and friends. But for those who volunteer to host the festivities, the daunting task of preparing your home, and especially your dinner table (so that it is admired by all the guests) can be overwhelming. Luckily, a little creativity and planning can go a long way towards transforming your table into a beautiful and festive work of art.

There are many elements that go into setting a spectacular table arrangement suitable for your Christmas party. From the dishes, to the table cloth, to an amazing centerpiece, it all plays an important role. Putting everything together in advance is crucial to keeping the day-of preparations a little less hassle-free. This list will help you plan so that you can get everything you need to create a truly spectacular holiday table for you and your guests!

Tablecloths, Placemats, and Runners

Before anything else, it’s important to decide whether to use a tablecloth, placemats, or runners on the table, or perhaps all three! Tablecloths are great because they can hide old or damaged tables. If you go with this option, it is important to keep things simple. Since the cloth covers the entire table, sticking with a solid color like white, red, green or gold will keep your table from looking too complicated before you even start adding anything else.

Placemats can create a marvelous display while still protecting the surface of the table. And, layering placemats over the tablecloth adds a more luxurious look. Since placemats take up less surface area than a tablecloth, choosing ones with designs and details is a great way to add a touch of flare without overwhelming the overall feel of the table.

Another way to make the table festive and bright would be to go with a table runner. Table runners are perfect because they act like the ribbon on a present. The table runner also sets the stage for the centerpiece and other decorations.

Dishes, Stemware, and Silverware

Of course the dishes, stemware, and silverware are crucial elements to your Christmas dinner table, after all, you need them to serve and eat! Depending on your preference, casual or more formal setting styles are appropriate for this occasion, so just make sure you know how to go about setting the table for each style. Some choose to purchase specific holiday themed dinnerware to use year after year, but taking out your fine china is just as wonderful. To add depth to each place setting, and to make things easier when changing courses, simply stack your dishes and bowls according to course schedule.

The Centerpiece

The Christmas centerpiece and the decorations that accompany them is not only the most eye-catching element of the table, but it is also an opportunity for the host to be the most creative. Centerpieces are as unique as the host who creates them, and they can include candles, ornaments, figurines, and even mini wrapped presents.

However, I must say that my favorite part of creating a spectacular centerpiece is choosing the flowers. I always like to make the floral arrangement the focal point of my Christmas table! One of my “go to” companies, Flora2000 has a great collection of flower arrangements that will appeal to any host’s creative vision. Here are a few of my favorites.
