Web Design

Thanks to the Web, You Can Work From Home

Who doesn’t want to quit their day job and work from home. I mean really, who wants to go to work every day? Well, if you’re a web developer, you don’t have to. You can build a business from your house and make some supplemental income, or even make enough to replace a full time job. I’m going to go over how you can become a web developer within the shortest amount of time, with minimal skills, that way you can start making money fast.

So to start, we’ll skip going over the five basic programming languages of the internet, and head right over to the start of making a website. WordPress.com is the place to go to make a website. Seriously, its about as easy as it gets. Go to wordpress.com, and you can choose your own wordpress.com subdomain. You could choose any subdomain like example.wordpress.com, as long as no one else has it. I recently made an example one called turbobuilt1.wordpress.com. Once you choose your subdomain, you can choose your template. You’ll see a bunch of pretty templates to choose from. They’re made by top designers, so really, you are in good hands. Of course, there are many, many more possibilities, which you can change later. The main thing to understand now is that WordPress is a way that any non-coder can create a professional quality website. If you want to be able to make you own stuff, you’ll need to learn about the technologies in more detail. I am developing a much more in depth series on how to become a web developer on my blog that you can study to learn more. For now, this is all you need to start.

So now that you have a website, you can visit it. I can go to turbobuitl1.wordpress.com to see mine. Mine’s pretty basic right now. So how can you add information? Well, you can add a new page. Or you can add a new blog post. Adding a new page is childishly simple – you click “add new page” then give it a title and some content. You can put in words or pictures, whatever you like. Seriously, it’s that easy. If all you need is a simple 5 page site, that’s all you need. Granted, sometimes you need more than that, and that is why you learn the fundamental programming languages of the internet and how to become a website developer. There you can learn not just how to program websites, but also the fundamentals of money-making in the industry. But for now, you have enough information to really get started doing something cool.

Now if you want to go live with a site, and get your own cool www.example.com domain name, just click the upgrades button on the left side of the menu in the “my sites” dashboard. They will try to sell you a $99 per year plan. You don’t need that for a basic site. Look in the left hand column of the page, and click the “Domains” button underneath the “upgrade now” header. There you can click on the register a domain button and get a new domain for just 15 bucks a year. Pretty sweet, right? Without any time spent learning about HTML, you have built your own website.

Now how to get clients? Use your connections. Really, that’s the best way I can put it. Anyone who has a business needs a website. With a powerful arsenal of tools using wordpress.com you can build great sites easily for your clients. After you get a few up and running, you can decide if you want to further develop your skills by learning HTML, CSS and even Javascript and PHP. But for now, just start selling. Sell to everyone you know who may need web design, don’t be afraid to charge good money, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a web designer.
